There are no two ways about it. Autism sucks.
It sneaks up on unsuspecting children like a thief in the dead of night and steals their childhood. It creates so much havoc in homes that more than
75% of happily married couples who have an autistic child end up in divorce. When the diagnosis comes, you know that your child will be treated differently forever. Special classes, therapy sessions, having to purchase a special brand of socks to avoid the morning confrontation that comes with having to wear shoes and socks that are not comfortable for the child because of his sensory issues. There are days that jeans are fine and others that jeans cause so much agony that you just want to throw them all away. Your life must be a total routine where the simplest change in plans can cause an outburst that will last all morning. and never- I mean never - tell an autistic child that you are going to do something and then not do it. They remember everything.
Yesterday was day # 1. The first day following a diagnosis that we all thought was coming because of recent activity, but one that you hope never happens. It was the first day that my youngest son was taken from me. He is still here, but he is not the same. The beautiful blue eyes are empty. The number of words he was speaking for his age bordered on gifted, and now each day - like the 14 previous to it - he is regressing. He has become more emotional and less engaged. He is a different child, and I want the old one back.
For weeks my wife has been sharing with me the signs of his regression. At first we thought it was learned behavior and he was copying the things that he sees in Chandler. As time went on, and we took more and more notes, it was clear that whatever the trigger point was for Spencer - it had happened and our lives would never be the same again.
I have been working with Autism advocacy groups over the past few weeks, joining the board of two and working closely with another to ensure that parents who are about to have their First Day with Autism
have the resources necessary to provide the best care for their child. I always thought I was doing this because of the inspiration that Chandler has always provided me. Now he has a teammate. My wife is an absolute saint. She has an unwavering faith that I wish I could duplicate. She has never once asked "why us?", she just went to work to provide the best course of treatment for Spencer and has already lined up therapy and pre-school. I could not have asked for a better companion to take this journey with, she makes me stronger. Her biggest challenge is not our children with Autism, it's being married to me and she handles it with style and grace. She was sent to me, I have no doubt about that and it was the best gift I could have ever received.
Day # 1 was horrible. Day 2 is a little better, but I am still struggling. I will get over this - I have to for the two children who up until yesterday I thought the only thing I gave them was blue eyes.
We can either let Autism define who we are, or redefine Autism. I choose the latter. You see, my children are going to beat this. I am going to get Spencer back, and Chandler is going to have a normal life. I will not stop until this happens. I will not rest until progress is made and I will make sure that our children receive the best possible care, no matter the cost or location. They were placed in our care for a reason, and anything less would be letting them down - and I will not allow that to happen. I'm done crying (probably not, but soon), I'm done feeling sorry for myself. I'm done trying to find someone to blame for taking the most precious thing from me.
Today is day # 1 for some parent, tomorrow will be day one for another. Each child deserves the best possible treatment and access to resources. Each parent deserves access to the same resources and alone time with their spouse to ensure that they remain united in this lifelong fight.
Autism Sucks. So we're going to beat it - together.

Broke my heart to read this, The two of you have taken the strength of family and support to a much higher level than I can imagine. Your boys aren't 'Special' because of Autism, they are special because the Lord has something much bigger for them than any of us here on earth can imagine.
I love you guys! I know that the *reality shock* will wear off, but know that here on the west coast, in the NW, you have support, hugs and ultimate hope for all of you! Mel and C the two of you are a powerful couple... together nothing can bend or break and it wont be this either. I look up to the two of you as shining examples of family and sacrafice. I know that you will take Autism Awareness and support to such high levels, all who have a family member with it will praise you like I do, like your family does, like your friends do. I love you!

Yesterday, when I read Mama's post, I was thinking about how important it was for y'all to be Chan and Nooshie's parents. That Heavenly Father selected the two of you for all 4 of your special children. Today, when I read your post, C, I realized just how important it is for the boys to be brothers. Chan and Noosh will have each other to lean on, even when you and Mama H no longer have as much influence over their lives. The boys will be a team, and they will support one another. Stay faithful.
I hardly know what to say. I read your last 2 posts and had no idea that this was happening to your family. I don't really even know your family well. My heart broke as your heart was laid out for us to read. I have no idea how you really feel. I have never had to live for long with my child suffering a disease or syndrome or other unwelcome diagnosis. We have had a two-year-old's leg broken, surgery on a 1-month-old's throat, and stitches galore. I cherish our path when I see those like yours. We have had little trouble in life. But I know that life is about choices--how will we react to what is given us? Will we cling to God or curse Him? Will we be faithful as Abraham and Job? Or will we lay down and let the misery have us? I believe all of us will, one day, be faced with a decision of this magnitude. I am grateful that my trials are not yours. I don't know if I could do it. I know that you can, though. The Lord will give no commandment without preparing a way for us to accomplish that which He has commanded. I know He will help you if you ask. My heart goes out to you. We will pray for you to have the strength you need to guide these beautiful children through these tough years of their life, hopefully to a brighter future.
I, like R, hardly know what to say. I am so sad to see little S go, I love that little boy. It breaks my heart. I know money is always tight with big families, and I don't know how much of Chiropractic you guys agree with or like, and I'm sure you get sick of hearing about considering where we live and how many, many chiro students there are, but I wanted to tell you about a Chiropractor who is world renowned for transforming lives with his adjustments. He has been able to restore sight, movement and amongst other things he has recently been noticed for being able to lower blood pressure. Right now he is working with several autistic patients who are making incredible progress without medication and special schools, just adjustments. He is in Chicago and his first patient bill is $600 and I think $60 for every other adjustment. I know it seems like a lot, but his adjustments are meant for only every 3 months then to every 6 months when you get down to just 1 adjustment a year. Let me know if you want to know more. I am going to him for myself and for Calvy, honestly we are planning on putting it on a credit card because something like this is worth it and you can't put a price on health, which I know you guys know. Call me Momma, we'll talk. Let me make you lunch or something. I love you and I love your sweet family, I believe you can beat this, we can all do it together. Don't lose faith. Never forget that Heavenly Father TRULY loves you and loves your babies, He wants to be there for you and help you, but you have to open the door and keep it open.
You are in our prayers.
Pubelyma- Poo Belly Ma.....are you trying to call me fat.
